Locksmith in Halton HillsOlder homes.
Original locks, still working.

Plenty of houses in Halton Hills still carry their first mortise locks and brass knobs, and they are worth keeping. We service that hardware so it turns freely again, find matching parts where they exist, and only suggest replacement when a piece genuinely cannot be brought back. Character stays; the door locks.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 46 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 46% of homes in Halton Hills were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In an area where homes span several eras, one street may have original mortise locks and the next builder-grade cylinders. A locksmith working here carries parts for both, so whichever door he meets, the job finishes in one visit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 73% of homes in Halton Hills (2021 Census).Detached houses collect hardware from every renovation. A locksmith visiting one often finds three keyways, two finishes and one door that never latched right. Sorting all of that into a consistent, working set is a satisfying afternoon's work.

Ceramic dish holding keys on a wooden table beside a leafy vase, with a black door, deadbolt and knob behind. — Halton Hills
The call
The back door has a deadbolt in name only: a short bolt, a thin brass strike held by two little screws, and a jamb you can flex with your palm. It was fine for a builder's showing.

Gate & Building Entry Locks

Detached rim gate lock and separate box keeper on an outdoor workbench. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Halton Hills
The call
The gate to the side yard used to close with a satisfying click. After a winter of frost heaving the fence post, the latch now sits a full inch below where the strike is waiting for it, and the gate swings free no matter how hard it is…

When a landlord or employer holds keys to many doors, a restricted key system with a master hierarchy gives control without a fistful of keys, and stops any tenant or staff member copying theirs. The page explains how the keyway, the register and the hardware work together.

    High Security Locks

A colleague showed you a video of a lock being opened with a bump key in a few seconds. Then you went home and noticed your own deadbolt is the same style, bought at a hardware store a decade ago.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Three teenagers, a dog walker, a cleaner and one house key that keeps going missing. You are tired of cutting copies and would rather give each person a code you can switch off, with a proper deadbolt behind it.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

The patio slider is sitting crooked on its track. Its latch is snapped, the frame is bowed where it was pried, and the panel no longer meets the jamb, so the house cannot be closed up for the night.

Let's clear a few things up

Can the new deadbolt use the same key as my other doors?

Usually, yes. If the new lock shares a keyway with your existing cylinders, the locksmith repins it on the bench so your current key operates it, and nothing changes on anyone's ring. If the keyways differ, the other doors can be brought onto the new key instead. Say which key you want to keep before the hardware is chosen, because keyway is part of picking the lock.

Can every door in the house work from one key?

Yes, provided the cylinders share a compatible keyway, which the locksmith checks when choosing hardware. New cylinders are pinned on site to a single new key and any existing locks worth keeping are repinned to match. Front, back, side and garage doors commonly end up on one key, and a shed or gate padlock can join them. You then decide how many copies exist and who holds each.

My home is a designated heritage property. Does that change anything?

It reinforces the choice to service rather than replace. Where a property carries a heritage designation, changes affecting listed features can need extra sign-off, and original door hardware is occasionally among those features. A rebuilt mortise case with its original trim is preservation rather than alteration, and the locksmith's written record of what was retained and what was replaced is useful for your file.

I rent my unit. Can I request gate or entry lock service myself?

You can certainly call about a problem you are experiencing, such as a side gate that will not latch or a buzzer that stopped working, and the locksmith will look into it. Where the fix touches the shared entry everyone in the building relies on, rather than something specific to your own unit, the work is usually coordinated with whoever manages the property, since a rekey or replacement there affects every current resident, not just the person who noticed the problem first.
