Commercial Rekeying

The office has been reshuffled twice since the locks were last touched. Reception can open the server room, the warehouse crew has a key to accounting, and the chart that once explained who could open what has not been seen since the move.

In plain words

Rekeying is also a chance to decide how the keys should work, not simply to change them. Most businesses settle on a small number of key groups: one key for the doors every employee uses, another for the office, cash room or server closet that only managers open, and perhaps a single master for the owner that opens everything. The locksmith maps this out on a keying chart before touching a cylinder, then pins each lock so the plan holds true on the door. Staff carry one key instead of a ring, managers carry two, and the chart tells you at a glance who can open what.

The call
The renovation is finished and the contractors have gone, along with the loaner keys they used for six weeks. Trades, delivery drivers and an inspector all came through, and the front door still answers to the key that was passed around the site.

How the visit goes

Ceramic dish holding keys on a wooden table beside a leafy vase, with a black door, deadbolt and knob behind.
  1. Scene 1

Reading the keys that already exist

Before deciding anything new, it helps to understand the old. Gather every key the business can find, including the ones with faded tape labels, and the locksmith reads them against the cylinders on the walk. Some will turn out to be duplicates of each other, some will belong to hardware that was replaced years ago, and some may operate doors nobody expected them to. Hardware-store copies stand out by their blanks and by the way they wear. This reading shows how far the key count has drifted and whether an old master still exists, and it lets the new plan retire everything found in the drawer rather than only the keys anyone remembered.

  2. Scene 2

Pinning the master and change keys

When the plan includes a master, each cylinder is pinned to accept two keys: its own change key and the master above it. Thin master pins sit in the pin stacks so the plug can turn at both the change key's height and the master's; master keying can also create extra, unintended combinations, so the locksmith charts the system to keep those from lining up with someone else's key, and the manager's key opens its whole group and nothing beyond it. A well-built system leaves unused combinations in reserve, so when the business adds a door or a department next year the new cylinder joins the plan without disturbing the keys already in people's pockets.

  3. Scene 3

A routine for the next departure

Turnover stops being a security event once there is a procedure for it. When someone leaves, their key is collected against the register and ticked off; if it cannot be produced, the chart shows exactly which cylinders that key opened, and only those are dealt with. Businesses that chose interchangeable cores can go further: the manager takes the control key from the safe, swaps the affected core for a spare in less time than a coffee break, and the locksmith repins the removed core at leisure for the next time. Either way the response is measured and specific, and the front door is never left answering to a key that walked out with a former employee.

What shapes the quoteNorval Locksmith Pros

Documentation and register
A keying chart, a key register and stamped codes on every key are part of a proper commercial rekey, and the quote names the paperwork so it is never skipped.
Distance to the premises
Travel to the site is part of the call-out, and a unit in a downtown plaza and one at the end of a rural industrial road are different trips.
Upgrades chosen on the day
Some businesses use the visit to move to interchangeable cores, add a lockbox for the alarm company or fit a heavier cylinder on the cash room. Each is a separate line you can accept or leave.

Let's clear a few things up

We are a landlord with a tenant leaving. When should the unit be rekeyed?

Between tenants is the ideal moment: the departing tenant has handed back their keys, the new one has not yet received any, and the unit is empty for the work. The incoming tenant then starts on keys nobody else has held, and the landlord's own master or emergency key is set up at the same time. Where a lease has ended in dispute, the locksmith asks to see the paperwork before changing locks on a unit that still holds a tenant's goods.

Does stamping keys 'do not duplicate' stop people copying them?

Not reliably. The stamp is a request, and any key on a standard blank can be copied by anyone with the blank and a machine. What does work is controlling the blank itself through a restricted keyway, or controlling access to the lock through interchangeable cores and a tight register. Stamping still has a place: a serial code on each key, instead of the business name, lets you track it without telling a finder where it fits.

How do you confirm I am allowed to have the locks changed?

For a business the locksmith looks for someone with standing: the owner, a director, or a manager who can show written authority from one of them. A lease, a business registration or a letter on company paper usually settles it, along with photo identification. Where doors belong to a landlord, the property manager's approval is asked for as well. This is a short step and it protects the business from having its own locks changed by the wrong person.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 46 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 46% of homes in Halton Hills were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In an area where homes span several eras, one street may have original mortise locks and the next builder-grade cylinders. A locksmith working here carries parts for both, so whichever door he meets, the job finishes in one visit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 73% of homes in Halton Hills (2021 Census).Detached houses collect hardware from every renovation. A locksmith visiting one often finds three keyways, two finishes and one door that never latched right. Sorting all of that into a consistent, working set is a satisfying afternoon's work.
