Broken Key Extraction

In the parking lot your car key snapped in the driver's door. You are holding the plastic head with the buttons on it, the metal blade is inside the lock, and the spare is on a hook at home.

In plain words

Keys break for a reason, and finding that reason is half the visit. A brass key wears thinnest at its deepest cut, and after years of turning it fatigues there until a cold morning or a stiff bolt finishes it. Sometimes the lock is the culprit: grit in the keyway, a loose cap, worn pins, or a door that has dropped so the bolt binds and the key takes the strain. The extraction removes the piece; the inspection that follows tells you whether the lock needs a clean and lubricant, an adjustment, or a new cylinder, so it does not happen again next month.

The call
That key had been bending a little for years, and you kept straightening it. Today it finally cracked at the deepest cut. The stub is in the lock, and the spare you found goes in a few millimetres and stops against it.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

    What has already been tried

Before choosing a tool the locksmith asks what has gone into the keyway since the break. Tweezers often push a fragment deeper; a screwdriver tip can bend pins; a drop of glue on the other half bonds to nothing useful and leaves a film that has to be dissolved before extractors will slide. A second key jammed on top of the first is a common find. None of this is anything to be embarrassed about; it just changes the plan, and knowing about it in advance means the right solvent, a plug follower or a spare cylinder is in the van before work starts.

  2. Scene 2

Thawing first on a frozen lock

A cylinder that broke a key because it was frozen needs the ice dealt with before the fragment will move. The locksmith works lock de-icer into the keyway, or holds gentle heat near the cylinder, until the ice inside liquefies and the plug loosens. Boiling water from the kettle stays indoors: it refreezes inside the keyway and can split a cold cylinder. With the plug free and at rest, the extraction proceeds as normal. Afterwards the cylinder is dried thoroughly and given a water-repelling dry lubricant rather than one that traps moisture, so the same morning is far less likely to repeat.

  3. Scene 3

A door that no longer fights the key

If the bolt had been dragging in its strike, that is corrected while the locksmith is there, because a bolt that binds turns every key into a lever. Dropped hinges get longer screws driven into the framing; a strike pocket that pinches the bolt is filed or shifted; a weatherstrip that was pushing the door off square is pared back. The test is simple: the thumb-turn should throw the bolt with one finger and no push on the door. Since wood swells in humid summers and shrinks in dry winter air, a seasonal glance at the screws keeps the key from taking the strain again.

In the van

  • Tension tool for resetting the plug
  • Replacement cylinder or deadbolt
  • Lock de-icer
  • Spiral key extractors
  • Compressed air for the keyway

What shapes the quoteNorval Locksmith Pros

Removing the cylinder to free it
A deep or bound fragment may need the cylinder taken off the door and the plug pushed out from behind on the bench. That disassembly and reassembly is quoted on its own.
How far the locksmith travels
Every call-out includes the drive. A lock on the next street and one at a rural address an hour out are different trips, and the quote includes travel as its own consideration.
Vehicle key electronics
Fitting a new blade to a chip head, or moving the chip and remote into a new shell, is separate from the extraction and quoted as such, as is any ignition check.

Let's clear a few things up

The key broke while the door was locked. Can you still get me in?

Yes. The fragment comes out first, because nothing else can happen while it blocks the keyway. With the cylinder clear and the plug at rest, the door is opened by the same non-destructive methods used for any lockout, then a working key is cut and tested. If the door is a rental, the visit is noted for the building manager on request.

Why did my key break at all?

Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied.

Part of the key is sticking out. Can I just pull it with pliers?

If a good length shows and the plug is at its normal rest position, a firm straight pull sometimes works. The risk is pushing instead of pulling, or twisting, which drives the piece deeper and can bend a pin. If it does not come on the first gentle try, stop there and leave it for extractor tools, which grip the cuts without loading the cylinder.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 46 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 46% of homes in Halton Hills were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Mixed housing ages mean the advice changes door by door. An older solid-wood entry may want a strike reinforced; a newer steel door may want its short strike screws swapped. The locksmith looks at the door in front of him rather than assuming.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 73% of homes in Halton Hills (2021 Census).Homeowners in houses often want a spare key that lives outside safely. A locksmith can fit a proper key safe or set up a keypad so a hidden key under a pot is no longer part of the plan.
